Global Engagement
The University of Mississippi – Office of Global Engagement

If you are an unvaccinated international student, you probably have lots of questions about your first week at the University of Mississippi.  Please see below for frequently asked questions.

If you are fully vaccinated, then you do not need to self-quarantine.  If you are comfortable, please voluntarily disclose your vaccination status by uploading your vaccination documentation to this Box folder.  The documentation does not need to be in English.

Please note that the below guidance is specific to the University of Mississippi and your arrival on campus, either as a new student or continuing student and does not override federal entry and travel requirements.  Please follow the guidance of your airline and follow the entry requirements specific to your flight and departure country.

DATES AND ARRIVAL

I am arriving on the official arrival day, August 15.  When is my self-quarantine over?

As long as you do not exhibit any symptoms of COVID-19, your self-quarantine period ends Sunday, August 22, just in time for classes to begin.  Remember that unvaccinated individuals should still wear a mask indoors.

I am arriving before the official arrival date.  When is my self-quarantine over?

As long as you do not exhibit any symptoms of COVID-19, your self-quarantine period will be over 7 days from arrival.  Count your arrival date as day 1.

I am arriving after the official arrival day.  When is my self-quarantine over?  Can I go to class?

As long as you do not exhibit any symptoms of COVID-19, your self-quarantine period will be over 7 days from arrival.  Count your arrival date as day 1.

We recommend that you communicate with your instructors by email and tell them that you have a self-quarantine per UM and CDC recommendations.  Let them know the date that you will be able to attend classes in person.

How do I get from the Memphis International Airport (MEM) to Oxford, Mississippi?

On the official arrival day of August 15, students can ride buses from MEM to Oxford with other arrivals.  Please make sure to check your email from your international student advisor about how to reserve a space.  Masks are required to ride the buses from the airport on arrival day.

Students arriving outside of the official arrival day can use Uber or UM Shuttle Services.  Masks are required at all times inside public transportation regardless of vaccination status.

Can I self-quarantine somewhere else in the United States and then arrive in Oxford, Mississippi?

Yes.  Please provide your flight itinerary as early as possible to your international student advisor so that we can confirm that your self-quarantine has ended.  This assists us with move-in, housing placements, and other activities.

What is required to check-in with ISSS?

You can also download our Remote Check In sheet for these instructions!

WELCOME WEEK, ORIENTATION, AND COURSE REGISTRATION

I am a new student in Fall 2021.  How do I attend International Student Orientation?

International Orientation is available virtually through Blackboard.  Every new international student has been enrolled in the Blackboard course, and you can complete it prior to arrival.

How do I attend the general Orientation session?

General Orientation sessions will be made available virtually.  ISSS will communicate how to participate in UM’s general Orientation by email.

How do I get my TB test?

All students can access health care during the 7 day self-quarantine.  Please visit the Health Center for your TB test during the designated times for international students.  Your time will be communicated to you by your international student advisor (Ann Piccione, Laura Vaughn, or Tori Goodman).  After you have completed your TB test, your Health Hold will be removed, and you can register for fall classes.

How do I register for classes?

Every student will have an assigned date and time to meet virtually with their advisor if their advisor meeting occurs during the 7 day self-quarantine.  Please look for emails from your international student advisor with instructions.

Can I attend any events during Welcome Week (August 16 – 21)?

If you are unvaccinated and still within your 7 day self-quarantine period, please do not attend any in-person events or activities except for obtaining necessities, such as food or medical care.  Feel free to take walks or exercise outside, physically distanced from others.

The Office of Global Engagement has postponed its main Welcome Week events, such as the International Welcome Dinner, to later in the semester to accommodate the self-quarantine period so that everyone can participate.  We will be in touch about upcoming activities by email.

HOUSING

I am living on campus in the fall.  Can I self-quarantine in my assigned room?

Please read through the below options for what applies to you.  You should check with your international student advisor if your situation is different from the options below.

If both you and your roommate are unvaccinated and arrive in the same transportation (such as the same arrival day shuttle), you can self-quarantine together.  You must also be assigned to a contemporary residence hall with an in-room bathroom or residential college.

If either you or your roommate arrives at different times and you are both unvaccinated, the roommate who arrives first should self-quarantine for 7 days in the assigned fall housing space, if assigned to a contemporary residence hall or residential college with an in-room bathroom.   The unvaccinated roommate who arrives after the first unvaccinated roommate should contact the Department of Student Housing directly at housing@olemiss.edu to arrange a self-quarantine space.

If you are unvaccinated but your roommate is vaccinated even if you arrive at different times, then you can self-quarantine with your roommate as long as both of you consent to living together during your 7 day self-quarantine.  To consent, you and your roommate should send an email to housing@olemiss.edu expressing your consent to live together during the 7 day self-quarantine.  You must also be assigned to a contemporary residence hall or residential college with an in-room bathroom.

If you are living in a traditional residence hall with a communal bathroom, you should contact the Department of Student Housing directly at housing@olemiss.edu to arrange a self-quarantine space.

How do I know if my roommate is vaccinated or unvaccinated?

If you or your roommate have disclosed their COVID-19 vaccination status to the international office through the Box folder, we will arrange that vaccinated roommates be assigned to the same room.  However, if we do not know you or your roommate’s vaccination status, we will assume that you are both unvaccinated and assign housing accordingly.  We encourage you to discuss your vaccination status with your roommate and also discuss how to feel safe in your shared space.

I am living off campus in the fall.  Can I move into my apartment?  How do I self-quarantine?

Yes, you can move into your apartment and self-quarantine in your apartment.  We recommend that you communicate with your roommates about the recommendation to self-quarantine.  During your 7 day period, please stay home, use delivery services, monitor for COVID-19 symptoms, and wear a mask in common living spaces.
